Mind desires more
This gesture of the Opposition leader at the demise of the head of state has been very redeeming and heartening. It shows that democracy has been prospering in the country and the opposition accepts President as symbol of national unity. President Zillur Rahman was in favour of introducing element of tolerance in politics as he was averse to prevailing politics of confrontation marked by vitriolic exchanges between leaders of opposing political camps. The people of the country believe that Khaleda Zia’s gesture is in continuation of the efforts initiated by the late President to bring about rapprochement among opposing political parties. An opportunity came and people were hopeful that the Prime Minister and the opposition leader would sit together or at least exchange pleasantries. The opposition leader extended her hand and by doing so she collected her share of the dividend. This was definitely a positive indication. But people’s expectations have remained unfulfilled.
The way Khaleda Zia has demonstrated her trust in democracy is praiseworthy and it has prompted the people to think that very soon she will discard those who had opposed the liberation of Bangladesh and collaborated with Pakistani occupation forces in 1971. According to a survey BNP will get another 10 to 11% vote if it discards the anti- liberation Jamaat. Our Opposition leader will hopefully think over and look at this issue in a new light before taking a final decision on this public demand.
