Kolkata, Jan 9 : Actor Aamir Khan said he owed his superstar status to his great granduncle, scholar, thinker, writer and freedom fighter Maulana Abul Kalam Azad who had egged on his uncle Nassir Hussain to follow his heart and join the film industry despite all discouragements from family members.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the fifth Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival held at the grounds of the historical Victoria Memorial, Aamir Khan on Wednesday said: "My uncle Nassir Hussain wanted to enter film industry, but was dissuaded by the family members as films were not seen as a profession of the respectable people."

It was when the legendary film maker approached Maulan Azad and received the advice to "follow your heart" , it changed the course of his life.

"Maulana Sahib told him not to listen to anybody and do what his heart wanted," said Khan.

Relating what would have happened in the absence of the advice from his great granduncle the actor said, " If my uncle Nassir Hussain had not joined films, my father (Tahir Hussain) would not have been part of the film industry and so I would have been somewhere else now."

"So many years later, my film \'3 Idiots\' had the same message," said the superstar.

Calling the advice of Azad to Nassir Hussain as "a priceless piece", Aamir said "I hope that someday I’ll be able to use my capabilities and the art form that I practice to make a film on Azad.”
