Dhaka, September 26: People will now have to pay an 'extra charge' if they want to drive in elite areas of the capital. Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam made the remarks at a march in the capital's Khilgaon on Saturday (September 25). The march was organized by the Dhaka Transport Coordinating Authority on the occasion of World Private Car Free Day.

Mayor Atiqul Islam said, "The number of private cars has increased in the capital. Cars and cars when out on the streets. From Shooting Club to Gulshan-1, from Gulshan-1 to Gulshan-2, from Banani to Gulshan-2, only cars and cars enter the road. Many people have a separate car for everyone in the family. The number of our cars has increased a lot. The level of traffic jam is increasing day by day for these vehicles. So we have also planned to charge extra for those driving through elite areas of the capital."

He said, “We have seen abroad that those who have cars also have to pay extra charges if they enter certain roads. So we have also planned to charge extra if the car enters the elite areas, including Gulshan Baridhara. We will put machines in these elite areas and first count the cars, see how many vehicles enter. Then we will implement the matter by conducting a survey. Then 'extra charge' will be levied while driving in elite areas."

Atiqul Islam said, "Many vehicles are running on our roads without route permits, many vehicles do not have fitness. We need to take urgent action on these issues. Besides, the locals will take responsibility for the areas where there are problems. Let me know what the problem is, what to do. I will take the initiative to solve those problems with you.

The DNCC mayor added, “Our sidewalks are occupied, the canals are in the same condition. We have to get rid of these. Everyone needs to be vocal. We need to open up our playgrounds for the next generation. We have to build a beautiful, vibrant, modern, healthy Dhaka by fulfilling our responsibilities from our respective places."
