Dhaka, February 24: More than 6,500 migrant workers have died in Qatar in the last 10 years since the World Cup was announced and at least 1,018 of them are Bangladeshis.

A decade ago, Qatar was selected as the host of the 2022 Football World Cup. Soon after, the Middle Eastern country started a huge work on infrastructural development.

They undertook dozens of huge projects, including seven new stadiums for the World Cup. Some of the work has already been completed, the work of the rest is in full swing. And this work is being done mainly by migrant workers from South Asia.

According to a report in the British daily The Guardian on Tuesday, more than 6,500 workers from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka have lost their lives working in Qatar in the last 10 years. In other words, an average of 12 workers from these five countries die every week in Qatar.

According to the British news outlet, based on official data from Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, 5,927 workers from these four South Asian countries died in Qatar between 2011 and 2020. Most of them are Indian workers.

In the last 10 years, 2,711 Indian workers have died in Qatar. Then there are 1,641 Nepalese, 1,018 Bangladeshis and 557 in Sri Lankans.

In addition, according to the Pakistani embassy, 824 of their workers lost their lives in the Middle Eastern country between 2010 and 2020. However, the actual number of migrant workers killed there is even higher in the last decade. This is because the Guardian's calculations do not include workers from countries such as the Philippines and Kenya. There are no accounts for the last few months of 2020.
