119 buildings to shelter climate refugees in Cox's Bazar

Dhaka, November 26: The government will construct 119 buildings to house 3,808 families who have been forced to move out of their homes due to climate change and the expansion of the Cox's Bazar International Airport.

The 5-storey buildings in Khurushkul mouza of Sadar upazila will cost Tk 1,333.61 crore. The project will be completed in June 2023.

A meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday (November 24) approved a project called 'Khurushkul Special Shelter'. The project will be implemented at the initiative of the Prime Minister's Office by the Engineer-in-Chief branch of the Army.

The objective of the project is to reduce the poverty rate nationally by providing livelihood including rehabilitation of 3,808 landless families due to the expansion of climate refugees and Cox's Bazar International Airport.

The main activities of the project are: construction of 119 5-storey buildings, construction of a mosque and a temple, construction of 22.60 km of internal and connecting roads, construction of 36 km of drains, installation of 28 centrifugal pumps, installation of 8 km water lines and 14 overground water reservoirs, four cyclone shelters, rainwater harvesting, construction of ponds, jetties and sub-stations and installation of solar panels.

In this regard, the Planning Commission is of the view that the project titled 'Khurushkul Special Shelter' will play a helpful role in reducing the national poverty rate by improving the living standards of the climate refugees and landless people. As a result the project can be approved.
