Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 10: Twelve freight trains could not reach Bangladesh due to strict restrictions on Indian wheat exports. A total of 504 wagons of these trains have about 2,400 tonnes of wheat.

As the Indian authorities have banned wheat exports in most countries, special permission is required for trains to come to Bangladesh. That is why they have been stuck for a few days. This information has been given in one of the reports of Indian media on Thursday.

According to Indian media, the exporters who want to send consignments of these wheat to Bangladesh are waiting to get the Certificate of Registration (RC) from the regional authorities under the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) of India.

According to the report, the Indian Ministry of Railways is facing an uncertain situation with the wagons stranded carrying emergency goods. Such wagons usually carry other things including manure.

Sources in the Indian Ministry of Railways said that efforts are being made to expedite the process of starting the train service so that the empty wagons for carrying other goods can be brought back quickly.

Sources in the Indian government said that all the Letter of Credits (LCs) are being verified by the consulting banks to eliminate the risk of fraud and then RCs will be issued.

Following the ban on unimpeded wheat exports on May 1, the DGFT directed the regional authorities to be strict in issuing RCs to eligible exporters. However, the DGFT issued new guidelines on May 30 after receiving reports that some unscrupulous exporters were submitting fake LCs for RCs with an issue date of May 13 or earlier.

The guidelines say that if necessary, all LCs will be physically checked by the regional authorities, whether they are already approved or in the process. If necessary, the help of a professional organization can be taken in this work. At the time of physical verification, the validity or approval of the recipient bank has to be confirmed.
