1200 refugee homes burnt to ashes in Cox's Bazar Rohingya camp fire

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, January 10: Around 1,200 refugee homes have been burnt down in a massive fire at Shafiullah Kata Rohingya Camp No. 16 in Palangkhali in Cox's Bazar's Ukhia. Eighth Armed Police Battalion's Commanding Officer Md. Sihab Kaiser Khan has confirmed the news.

The major fire broke out in the B-block of the Rohingya camp around 5:15 pm on Sunday (January 9). Fire service's personnel fought for nearly two hours to bring the blaze under control.

Additional Superintendent of Police of the 8th Armed Police Battalion, Md. Kamran Hossain, said the fire was initially reported to have started from a gas stove in the house of Mohammad Ali (35) of B-Block. Later the fire spread to the other parts of B and C blocks. Upon receiving the news, the officer force of 8 APBN and the fire service in a joint effort brought the fire under control around 7:15 pm. However, no casualties were reported in the fire.

Naimul Haque, Superintendent of Police of the Armed Police Battalion-14 (APBN), who worked at the camp, said, "We have worked together to control the fire. The fire is under control. Work is now underway to assess the damage."

Upon receiving the news of the fire, Rohingya Refugee Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (RRRC) Shah Rezwan Hayat, UNO Nizam Uddin of Ukhia and other senior officials of the administration rushed to the scene.
