14 parties congratulate PM on getting climate award
Dhaka, Dec 5: Fourteen parties congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on receiving the Asia Climate Mobility Champion Leader Award. A meeting of 14 parties was held at Ganabhaban on Monday evening. Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina spoke at the beginning of the meeting.
At the beginning of the meeting, the leaders of 14 parties congratulated the Prime Minister on receiving the Asia Climate Mobility Champion Leader Award. Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud handed over the award to the Prime Minister at Ganabhaban on Sunday (December 3) morning. The Prime Minister received the award in recognition of his leadership and vocal voice in combating the harmful effects of global climate change. He was awarded the prize by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN-backed Global Center for Climate Mobility.
Information Minister Hasan Mahmud received the award on behalf of the Prime Minister from UN General Assembly President Ambassador Dennis Francis and IOM Director General Amy Pope at a high-level panel session on the side-lines of the World Climate Conference-Cop 28 in Dubai on Friday (December 1) noon.
Pointing out that now is the right time to bring the issue of climate mobility into the mainstream of the global climate change discussion, the information minister said that at the Climate Mobility Summit of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September this year, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina brought the issue of climate-induced migration and displacement to the attention of world leaders.
Hasan Mahmud said that Bangladesh has raised the issue in two dialogues organized with the cooperation of IOM in Dhaka and COP-27 in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh last year. At the same time, he highlighted various aspects of Bangladesh's initiatives under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to face the challenges of climate change, including the construction of the world's largest multi-storey social housing project to resettle 4,400 displaced families in Cox's Bazar.
The award-winning Global Center for Climate Mobility works with the United Nations, regional intergovernmental organizations and development finance agencies to develop collaborative comprehensive solutions to address climate mobility.
