Dhaka, September 1: The 14th session of the National Assembly will start today, September 1, at 5:00 pm. The session will begin under the chairmanship of Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury. This session will last only four working days. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, strict hygiene rules will be followed.

Due to the coronavirus, the National Assembly be operational on Friday (September 3). The session will be held at 4:30 pm on that day. Besides, the parliament will convene on September 2 and 4 at 11 am. It has been decided to end the session as soon as possible due to ongoing pandemic. However, no journalists will be allowed to enter the parliament.

Joint Secretary of Parliament Md. Tariq Mahmud said that it was not possible to provide pass to the journalists during the session as a preventive measure against the coronavirus infection. In the public interest, all the activities of the session will be broadcast live on Sangsad Bangladesh Television. According to the parliamentary officials, the MPs and concerned persons will have to get tested for Covid-19 before entering the parliament.

The upcoming session will be the fourth session this year. The 13th session of the parliament ended on July 3, which was the budget session. The last few sessions have been held in compliance with the rules of hygiene due to the constitutional obligation in the outbreak of corona. There is a constitutional obligation to convene a session of the National Assembly within 60 days after the end of one session.

The names of the five presidium members will be announced at the beginning of this session. They will conduct the sittings of Parliament in the absence of the Speaker or Deputy Speaker. Then a condolence motion will be brought on the death of Awami League MP Professor Md. Ali Ashraf. At the end of the mourning, everyone will stand and observe a minute of silence to pay their respects to the soul of the deceased. Then a special prayer will be offered for the forgiveness of the soul of the deceased. Later, the session will be adjourned as per the rules of Parliament.
