16,800 accused in 5 cases of violence in Saltha

Dhaka, April 9: After one case of violence in Faridpur's Saltha upazila, four more cases were registered till 12 midnight last Thursday (April 8). The total number of cases increased to five, including one case filed by the police. One of the four new cases has been filed by the freedom fighter Bachchu Matubbar. In this case, the names of 25 people have been mentioned and 800 more unnamed people have been accused.

Faridpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Investigation) Jamal Pasha said police had so far arrested 26 people on suspicion of involvement in the Saltha violence. When 11 of them were handed over to the court on Wednesday (April 8) for remand for 10 days, the court granted remand for two days each. On Thursday, the remaining 17 were remanded to the district chief judicial magistrate's court for seven days.

Saltha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) driver Md. Hashmat Ali became the plaintiff by mentioning the names of 58 people and the accused has filed a case against four thousand anonymous persons. Another case has been filed by Samir Biswas, security guard of the Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) office. In this case, he mentioned the names of 48 people and made 4,000 people anonymous accused. Besides, the names of 42 people have been mentioned in the case filed by Sagar Sikder, the driver of the vehicle of Saltha Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land). Four thousand people have been made anonymous accused.

Earlier on Tuesday, Sub-Inspector of Police Muhammad Mizanur Rahman filed the first case alleging assault at the police station and obstruction of government work by naming 88 people and showing anonymity to 4,000 people. In the five cases that have been filed so far, the names of 261 people have been mentioned. 16,800 people have been made anonymous accused.

It may be mentioned that last Monday evening, Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Marufa Sultana Khan Hiramani visited Fukra Bazar in Sonapur Union of the upazila to inspect the effectiveness of the lockdown. At that time people were running around in the presence of the assistant commissioner. Later the locals gathered. Seeing the crowd of people, Aceland left Fukra Bazaar. Later, a rumor was spread that a cleric of Hefazat had been arrested. From 7 pm to 11 pm, several thousand people entered the upazila premises with shields and sticks and carried out violence in various government offices and police stations.
