17 killed as bus tries to leave passage for easy bike in Jhalokati

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 22 July 2023: At least 17 people were killed when a passenger bus lost control and fell into a pond in Jhalokati Sadar. Twenty-three survivors were rescued and sent to hospital. It is feared that the death toll may increase.

The police said about the rescued passengers, the terrible accident took place when the bus went to side an easy bike. The accident took place in front of UP building in Chatrakanda area of Sadar Upazila around 10:30 am on Saturday (July 22).

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station Nasir Uddin Sarkar said that it was possible to rescue the sinking bus around 12 noon. However, the identity of the dead passengers has not yet been found.

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, around 10:30 am, the passenger bus Basha Smriti Paribahan was going to Barisal with 60 passengers from Bhandaria in Pirojpur. On reaching Chatrakanda area of Jhalokati Sadar Upazila, the bus lost control and fell into the pond while passing an easybike at the turn in front of UP Bhavan. Locals immediately tried to rescue. Later fire service and police reached the spot and started rescue operation. First 13 bodies and later four more bodies were recovered. Twenty-three survivors were sent to hospital.

OC Nasir Uddin Sarkar said that 17 bodies have been recovered so far. Twenty-three injured people have been taken to hospital. Some of them were also seen smiling.
