1971 Genocide: DU Vice-Chancellor calls for collective action to seek UN recognition

Dhaka, November 21: The Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman called upon the organizations and institutions based on the liberation war to work together for the international and UN recognition of the genocide committed in Bangladesh during the 1971 liberation war. He made this call in the president's speech at a coordination meeting organized by 'Amra Ekattar', an organization of liberation war ideals, held at DU's vice-chancellor building on the occasion of the preparation of the International Genocide Remembrance Day on December 9.

DU Vice-Chancellor said that the path to UN recognition of the genocide in Bangladesh in 1971 is not smooth. Therefore, the new generation should also be included in the realization of this demand along with various organizations based on the liberation war. All must stand on a common platform and work together.

On the occasion of the International Genocide Remembrance Day, he emphasized on increasing international communication at public and private levels, including discussion, research, publication on genocide issues. He also assured that the Dhaka University authorities will work as a leading party to realize this demand.

Bangabandhu Prof. Muntasir Mamun, Trustee of '1971 Genocide-Torture Archive and Museum', suggested taking various programs to raise awareness about Bangladesh Genocide in national and international diplomatic circles. He said that in order to speed up the efforts to get the UN recognition of the genocide, the recognition should be obtained first from the friendly countries of the liberation war.

At the beginning of the meeting, Mahbub Zaman, the chairperson of Amra 71, informed the meeting about the various activities undertaken by the organization to demand recognition of the genocide. He said, besides raising awareness at the national and international levels, public opinion should be created on this issue. He highlighted the various programs we have undertaken on the occasion of the International Genocide Remembrance Day.
