2 killed as cylinder-loaded pickup van overturns on Padma Bridge

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, July 18: Two people were killed when a pickup van loaded with oxygen cylinders overturned on Padma Bridge. Three people, including a woman and her twin daughters, were injured in the accident. The injured were sent to Dhaka after providing first aid at a local hospital.

The accident took place near pillar number 13 of the bridge on Sunday (July 17) around 10 pm. The deceased were identified as Md. Raju Khandkar and Md. Kausar.

Alamgir Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Padma Bridge North Police Station said that the pickup van carrying oxygen cylinders was going towards Dhaka via Padma Bridge from Shariatpur. On the way, the vehicle lost its control and overturned near pillar number 13 of the bridge. Two died on the spot.

He also said that three injured persons had been rescued and sent to the local Srinagar Upazila Health Complex Hospital. Later they were sent to Dhaka in critical condition.

Asaduzzaman, a doctor in the emergency department of Srinagar Upazila Health Complex, said that five people were brought to the hospital immediately after the accident. But two died on the spot. The three injured persons were found to have injuries in different parts of their bodies. They have been shifted to Mitford Hospital in Dhaka after first aid.

Miraj, the driver of the pickup, said that apart from the helper in the pickup, Rajib Khandkar, the brother of the owner of the pickup, Anwar Hossain, was killed. Rajib's wife Mukta and their 10-month-old twin daughters were sent to Dhaka with serious injuries.

OC Alamgir said that there were 85 empty oxygen cylinders in the pick up van. The vehicle and the cylinders have been recovered.
