25 market-buildings closed for 10 days due to fear of big earthquake in Sylhet

Dhaka, May 31: The Sylhet City Corporation has directed to close 25 risky buildings and markets in Sylhet city for the next 10 days due to frequent earthquakes. Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury himself inspected 6 markets and closed them.

On Sunday (May 30) afternoon, the mayor visited City Super Market, Madhuban Super Market, Mitali Mansion, Cooperative Building, Raja Mansion, Surma Market and James Gallery in the city and closed them. He was accompanied by Sisik Executive Magistrate and Sylhet Metropolitan Police officials.

In this regard, Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury said that 25 risky markets and buildings have been asked to be closed for the next 10 days to prevent damage due to frequent earthquakes in Sylhet city. This includes the markets visited today. All these markets are already on the risk list.

Nur Azizur Rahman, chief engineer of Sylhet City Corporation, said 25 multi-storey buildings in the city were identified as risky in 2019.

The buildings are: Collectorate Building-3 on the north side of the Deputy Commissioner's Office, Cooperative Bank Building in Jail Road, former office building for Women Affairs Officer in the same area, Surma Market, City Super Market in Bandarbazar, Mitali Mansion in Zindabazar, Hotel Ajmer in Dargagate, Super Marg in Bandarbazar. Mannan View, Shubhechcha-226 building in Sheikhghat area of ​​the city, Nabapushpa 26 / A house in Jatarpur, 51/3 Sarkar Bhaban in Chowkidekhi, Rajaman mansion in Zindabazar, 4 / A Kibria Lodge in Puranlane, Mitali-74 in Kharpara, Mirzajangal Meghna A-39/2, Pathantula Government Primary School, Ekta 377/7 Warish Manzil of North Bagbari, Ekta 377/8 Hossain Manzil of the same area, Ekta-377/9 Shahnaz Riaz Villa, Bankalapara Norani-14, Municipal Market on the south bank of Dhopadighi and Municipal Shop at Dhopadighirpar.

Among them, 4 / A Kibria Lodge of Puranlane has been repaired by hiring experts from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.

Several tremors were felt in Sylhet from Saturday (May 29) to Sunday (May 30) morning. The quake knocked down a six-storey building in the city's Pathantula. Sylhet City Corporation has taken special observation and preparation for the fear of big earthquakes due to small earthquakes. There is also a control room and hot line.
