3 injured as over-speeding truck overturns on Padma Bridge

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 28: Three people were injured when an over-speeding truck carrying onion overturned on the north flank (outside the river) of the Padma Bridge at the Mawa end of Munshiganj. The conditions of two injured people are critical. The accident took place around 5:30 pm on Monday (June 27), the second day of traffic movement on the Padma Bridge.

The three injured were rushed to a hospital under the care of the army, locals said.

Md. Shahed, the owner of the onion who was in the truck that time, said, "I was going to Shyambazar in Dhaka with 134 sacks of onion from Muksudpur in Gopalganj. The driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle when it reached the Mawa end of the bridge from Jajira end. Then the accident took place. The truck hit the railing of the bridge and overturned."

He added, "We were four people in the vehicle that time, and three of us were injured. I have injuries in my hand. I don't know the names the driver and helper. However, one of injured is my nephews. His name is Keramat (21)."

An eyewitness said the truck hit the railing at a high speed and overturned. The driver, helper and another were seriously injured. The army came and took them away in a car."

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Padma Bridge North Police Station Alamgir Hossain said, "The accident happened due to excessive speed. Immediately after receiving the news, the vehicle involved in the accident was removed from the spot. The injured are being treated at a hospital."
