3 kg gold recovered from Qatar returnee

Dhaka, January 20: The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department has seized 3.48 kilograms of gold from a passenger returning from Qatar, at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The estimated value of the seized item is Tk 2.32 crore. Abu Hanif Md. Abdul Ahad, assistant director of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department, confirmed the news on Tuesday (January 19).

He said the Director General of Customs Intelligence received information about the smuggling of gold at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. In this context, the customs detective airport team increased surveillance.

Flight KR638 from Qatar landed at Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday. The passengers were monitored and searched.

Abu Hanif added that the movements of a passenger named Nazrul Islam were suspected.

When he was questioned about the gold, he denied it at first. After searching, 30 gold bars and 98 grams of gold ornaments were found hidden in his body. Weight 3.48 kilograms, the estimated value of Tk 2.32 crore.

Action is being taken against the detained passengers under the Customs Act. At the same time, the Assistant Director of Customs Intelligence said that the Customs Detectives will continue their activities to curb smuggling as per the instructions of the Director General.
