Dhaka, August 9: At least three lakh people in hundreds of villages of 60 unions of nine upazilas of Cox's Bazar have become waterlogged due to five consecutive days of heavy rain and landslides. Roads and houses are submerged. There is a shortage of food and clean drinking water in these areas. The flood victims have to suffer a lot.

Dam broke in several parts of Matamuhuri, Bankkhali and Eidgaon Phuleshwari river. Village after village drowned as water flowed through the breach. Initially, 51 km of regional roads and 2.5 km of highways have been damaged. At the same time, erosion continues in coastal areas including Marine Drive, Cox's Bazar beach.

Meanwhile, long-distance traffic on the Cox's Bazar-Chittagong road was stopped from Tuesday morning due to the road being submerged.

Sources from Cox's Bazar regional office of the Meteorological Office said that 107 mm of rainfall was recorded in 24 hours from Sunday 3 pm to Monday 3 pm, and 93 mm rainfall was recorded from 12 noon to 12 midnight on Monday. The rain will continue for a few more days.

Meanwhile, due to heavy rainfall, about two and a half feet on the road in Hashimpur Kasaipara, Pathanipool, Kalgharbridge area of Dohazari Municipality of Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway of Dohazari highway police station and more than one foot of water over the highway from upstream to downstream in Nayakhal, New Railway Line, Keranihatbazar and Chdahar Hasmat shops in Satkania. Flowing causes disruption to traffic. While some large vehicles are moving slowly, small and medium vehicles are at a standstill. Earlier on Monday, water rose in Bajalia area of Bandarban road and communication between Cox's Bazar and Chittagong was stopped.

Coastal areas of Marine Drive, Cox's Bazar Beach Labani, Sugandha Point, Maheshkhali and Qutubdia upazilas continue to be eroded due to tidal waves. Geobags are placed in some parts of Marine Drive to prevent erosion. But a few more places have broken again.

Heavy rains on Monday night left up to one-and-a-half feet of water in major and minor streets of the city's tourist zone. The ground floor of many hotels has been damaged by water. The victims said that water has entered many houses in Saitakpara. Same situation in Pahartali, Lighthouse, Rahmania Madrasa area.
