34 including 26 BUET students arrested for allegedly planning sabotage

Dhaka, August 1: A total of 34 people, including 26 students of Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET), have been arrested for allegedly plotting a sabotage plan at Haor in Sunamganj's Tangua.

They were arrested on Monday afternoon on charges of conspiracy against the government by carrying out terrorist activities, secret conspiracy to cause harm to public life and religious jihad.

According to Tahirpur police station, a team of 34 people including 26 students of BUET and eight other students from different educational institutions took a boat from Tahirpur upazila market boat ghat at 7 am on Sunday to visit Tangua Haor. There a meeting was held to plot against the government by creating secret conspiracies and religious jihad for the purpose of harming public life and property.

Later, the police got information from a confidential source and arrested the boat in front of the new market of Tahirpur on Sunday afternoon and took them to the police station. After a long 24-hour interrogation, Deputy Inspector (SI) Tahirpur Police Station Rashedul Kabir filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act on Monday afternoon.

Sunamganj Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Saeed said that through secret information, we have come to know that 34 students of BUET and other educational institutes are holding a conspiracy meeting against the government by creating a secret conspiracy and religious jihad for the purpose of harming public life and property. Later we arrested them by carrying out a special operation. After 24 hours of questioning, they were arrested. For the sake of investigation, more cannot be said now. The detained students are believed to be close to Jamaat-Shibir.
