4 killed in landslide in Cox's Bazar

Dhaka, August 8: Four people, including three children and a woman, were killed in separate landslides in Cox's Bazar.

The incident took place on Monday afternoon in the Rohingya camp of Ukhia and in the neighborhood of Purba Vilizar of Chakaria upazila. The deceased are Jannat Ara (28) and her daughter Mahim Akhter (2). The other two children have not been identified.

Chakaria Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) JP Dewan said that the low areas were flooded due to heavy rains and landslides coming down from the upstream. A landslide fell on the wall of a mud house in the village of East Baraitli Union of the upazila. Two children were crushed to death. Roads are submerged due to heavy rains and communication is cut off in the area. However, local UP chairman Mohammad Chalekuzzaman confirmed the death of two children.

Besides, a betel trader named Shah Alam (28) has gone missing while picking up the wood floating in the Matamuhuri river. He is the son of deceased Zaker Hosain of Hajipara of Laksharchar Union of Upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhia Police Station Sheikh Mohammad Ali said that two people named Jannat Ara (28) and Mahim Akhtar (2) were killed in the landslide in the Rohingya camp. They are the wife and daughter of Anwar Islam of block 9 of the camp. After preparing the surathal of mother and daughter, the body was handed over to the family without post mortem.

Meanwhile, a schoolboy named Yashin Mamun (16) died of electrocution while charging the TomTom battery in Maheshkhali. He was a class 10 student of the local Leadership High School.
