4 million people stranded in Sylhet-Sunamganj flood

Dhaka, June 19, 2022: The flood situation in Sylhet and Sunamganj has further deteriorated. Floods have spread further as rivers and haors continue to rise due to steep slopes and heavy rains.

About 4 million people in the two districts have been flooded. Concerned people say that this is a terrible flood in Sylhet. There is wailing and wailing among the waterlogged people. People are running in search of shelter. Children and adults are most at risk. The detainees are being rescued and taken to the shelter. People are taking shelter wherever dry and high places are available.

All the upazilas and half cities of Sylhet, upazilas and municipalities of Sunamganj have been flooded. The Sylhet-Sunamganj highway and the Sylhet-Bholaganj Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibu Rahman highway have sunk. Hundreds of shelters have been opened in the two districts.

Water supply to Kumargaon station, one of the power substations of Sylhet, has been cut off. Due to lack of electricity in Sunamganj for the last two days, the mobile network system has broken down and no one can be contacted.

The river water of Sylhet continues to rise. There was less rain in Sylhet on Friday night. The water has decreased by one or two inches till 9 am. It has been raining in Sylhet since then. As a result, floods as well as waterlogging have occurred throughout the city. All the roads are under water. The river water has started rising again due to the floods. The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rains in Sylhet for the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, the army and navy are working to rescue people trapped in flood-hit areas in Sylhet. 10 platoons of the army, 6 medical teams, 35 members of the navy have started working in two teams since Friday morning.

Sylhet Deputy Commissioner. Mujibur Rahman has confirmed this information. Navy personnel are using their own cruise and air force helicopters for the rescue operation.

According to district administration sources, a team of 35 members of the navy arrived in Sylhet on Friday night. On Saturday morning, a 35-member team began rescue operations with one Coast Guard cruise and two Air Force helicopters.

Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Muhammad Mosharraf Hossain said the flood situation was worst in 12 districts of Sylhet and Sunamganj. We are giving utmost importance to these areas. Army and navy have been deployed.
