Dhaka, December 4: The 40th span ‘2-E’ has been placed on the 11th and 12th pillars of the Padma Bridge at the Mawa end of Munshiganj. The span was installed on Friday.

With it six km of the bridge has become visible. One more span will make the whole Padma Bridge visible.

Padma Bridge Executive Engineer (Main Bridge) Dewan Md. Abdul Quader said that by installing this span, six kilometers of Padma bridge is visible. The only thing left was the 150 meter long span called '2-F'. Which will be placed on pillars 12 and 13 by December 16.

He added that the span was installed seven days after the 39th span was installed. The completion of the work of installing the span on the bridge in the month of victory will pave the way for the opening of new gates. In this situation, the tide of joy is flowing among the local people of Padmapar.

According to the Padma Bridge Authority, a floating crane 'Tian E' with a capacity of 3,600 tons took off from Mawa Construction Yard in Munshiganj at around 10:30 am on Thursday. After about half an hour, the crane reached the designated pillar. Then began the work of anchoring the floating crane. The work of anchoring through six cables (wires) was completed around noon.

Meanwhile, the work of laying railway slabs and roadway slabs in the spans at the ends of Mawa and Jazira is also in full swing. The bridge will need 2,917 road slabs. In the meantime, more than 1,239 slabs have been installed. Two thousand nine hundred and fifty nine rail slabs will be required for the railway. Of which more than 1,860 have been installed so far.

Construction of the Padma Bridge began in 2014. The first span was installed in December 2017. So far 40 spans have been installed step by step. The total number of pillars of the bridge is 42 and it will have 41 spans.

The main shape of this multipurpose bridge, which is 6.15 km long, will be two-storied. The structure of Padma bridge is being constructed with concrete and steel. Vehicles will run on the upper part of the bridge and trains on the lower part.
