Dhaka, September 17: Forty-five people have been arrested on suspicion of being members of militant groups from different mosques in Dinajpur. They were nabbed in a raid by the Counter Terrorism Unit at Sadar and Birle in Dinajpur. Additional Superintendent of Police Sujan Sarkar of Dinajpur Sadar Circle confirmed the news.

He said members of the counter-terrorism unit from Dhaka raided several mosques. They asked for our cooperation, as this was given to the police members from Dinajpur for their assistance.

Sources said the Dhaka Counter Terrorism Unit raided the Baitul Falah Jame Mosque on the east side of the Maharaja junction in Dinajpur Sadar Upazila around 12:00 am on Friday (September 17). At that time 12 people were arrested from there. At the same time, the members of the unit raided Biral Bazar Jame Mosque in Biral Upazila and arrested 17 people. Besides, about 15 people were detained from two more mosques in the upazila. Local police members assisted in the operation in both the upazilas.

According to a police source, members of the Counter Terrorism Unit came to Dinajpur at night on the basis of information that a group of Tabligh Jamaat was planning to sabotage Dinajpur Sadar and Biral Upazilas. Later, they conducted a joint operation with the help of the local police.

Khadim Abdur Razzak of Baitul Falah Jame Mosque said 22 people came from Dhaka on Thursday. Twelve of them stayed here and the rest left to stay in another mosque. When we went home after Esha prayers at night, they were staying in this mosque. Later in the night I heard that the police had taken them away.
