5 held for vandalizing Bangabandhu's mural while going to BNP's rally in Chittagong

Dhaka, June 15: On the way to join the Juba Dal rally in Chittagong's Kazi Deuri, some BNP leader-activists vandalized the mural of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Jamal Khan area of the metropolis. This incident happened around 3:30 pm on Wednesday. After the incident, the police arrested five leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal-Yubadal after examining the CCTV footage.

The arrested are: Md. Mahbub Siddiqui (35) of Shershah Colony of Bayezid Bostami Police Station, Md. Erfan (30) of East Baklia Ward No. 18 of Baklia Police Station, Nurul Islam alias Masum (39) of the same ward, Md. Mohiuddin Hasan Imon (20) of Waizer Para of the same ward, and Md. Eamon Khan (20) of Kalurghat Osmani Pool area of Chandgaon police station.

Jahidul Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali police station, said that all of them are Chhatra Dal-Jubadal leaders and activists. The official said that legal action is being taken in this regard.

He said that an immediate operation was conducted after reviewing the CCTV footage of the incident. Five people were arrested as the evidence of their involvement in the incident was found in the operation.

According to the police, BNP leaders and activists from Chandgaon and Baklia areas ambushed BNP leaders and activists in front of Chittagong College of Chawkbazar Police Station around 3:30 a.m. on their way to join the youth rally in Kazi Deuri. Later, BNP activists came to Jamalkhan intersection with batons around 3:30 and vandalized 40 tampered, glass, mural, boat symbols with still images of Bangabandhu's colorful political life painted on different walls of Jamalkhan road. Then they proceeded towards Kazi Deuri. Later they vandalized the glass nameplates, CC cameras, walls of humanity of the Regional People's Administration Center adjacent to Askardighi.
