69 percent of votes cast in 160 UP

Dhaka, September 22: In the elections of 160 Union Parishads (UP), the turnout was 69.34 percent. In 44 of these UPs, candidates for the post of chairman have been elected unopposed.

The Election Commission (EC) has prepared a report in this regard by coordinating the information sent from the field level. EC Joint Secretary SM Asaduzzaman said this on Tuesday (September 21) afternoon.

According to the EC report, the total number of voters in 160 UPs is 20 lakh 93 thousand 117 people. Among them 14 lakh 51 thousand 300 people have voted. In other words, the turnout was 69.34 percent.

Meanwhile, voting has taken place in eight UPs through electronic voting machine (EVM). The vote was 69.78 percent. The total number of voters in eight UPs was one lakh 62 thousand 979 people. One lakh 13 thousand 725 of them have voted.

The highest number of votes was cast in Khulna's Dakop. Five thousand 350 out of six thousand 333 voters have voted in this union. In other words, the turnout was 84.48 percent. Awami League candidate Binoy Krishna Roy won in this UP.

The lowest number of votes was cast in Musapur UP of Sandwip in Chittagong. Out of 31,401 voters, 13,740 cast their votes. In other words, the vote was 43.76 percent. Awami League candidate Md. Abul Khair won.

Earlier on Monday (September 20), the first phase of the postponed 160 Union Parishads went to the polls. Voting took place from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
