9 million liters of oil came in the pipeline on the first day

Dhaka, 19 March 2023 : Import of fuel oil (diesel) to Bangladesh has started in Bangladesh-India Friendship Pipeline.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined virtually on Saturday, March 18 at 5:50 PM to inaugurate the supply of diesel to the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline established in Parvatipur Upazila of Dinajpur.

On the opening day, 90 lakh liters of diesel arrived in the pipeline from India at the receipt terminal at Parbatipur in Dinajpur district of Bangladesh. With the commissioning of this pipeline, it will be possible to safely supply diesel to 16 districts of the northern region in a short time and at a low cost. Until now, diesel was imported from India in rail tankers.

To commemorate this historic moment of India-Bangladesh harmony and cooperation, starting from the receipt terminal area of the pipeline at Parvatipur in Dinajpur, the city's roads and intersections were decorated with colorful portraits of Bangabandhu, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Arrangements were made to screen the inaugural program at the Parvatipur Upazila Parishad hall. District Awami League president and former minister Advocate Mostafizur Rahman Fizar MP enjoyed the opening ceremony on the projector screen among others.

Later, BPC officials along with former minister Advocate Mostafizur Rahman Fizar MP unveiled the inaugural plaque at the receipt terminal. A 60 km pipeline from Numaligarh Refinery to Siliguri Rail Terminal in the eastern Indian state of Assam along with a 130 km pipeline from Siliguri Terminal to Parvatipur have been constructed. Out of this, 5 km in India part and 125 km in Bangladesh part. The cost has been estimated at 520 crores. Out of which the Government of India has invested Rs. 303 crores and Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation has invested Rs. 217 crores. It will be possible to transport 10 lakh metric tons of diesel per year through this 10 inch diameter pipe.

On September 18, 2018, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of the pipeline through a video conference.

This 15-year project is jointly implemented by India's Numaligarh Refinery Limited and Bangladesh's Meghna Petroleum Limited.
