A new railway factory is being built in Rajbari, there will be no meter gauge anywhere in the country: Railway Minister

Dhaka, November 16: Railway Minister Md. Nurul Islam Sujan said that a new railway carriage and wagon workshop is being constructed in Rajbari. He said that railways will not have meter gauge anywhere in the country, broad gauge system will be introduced.

He urged that the new factory in Rajbari should have all the coach repair facilities and that the work should be completed within the 16 months allotted for the project. He said these things at the signing ceremony of the survey on the construction of new carriage and wagon workshops at the Jamuna Conference Room of Bangladesh Railway Building adjacent to the Secretariat on Wednesday (November 16) at noon.

The railway minister said, "Our railways are still running on oil. Railways are running on electronic system in our neighboring countries. The new projects taken up will have electric system. Railway lines will be extended in every district."

He said, "Government has decided to go from meter gauge to broad gauge. So there will be no meter gauge anywhere, broad gauge system will be introduced. Besides, double line will also be introduced in the railway."

The railway minister said, "Out of the eight intersection points with India, we have been able to connect five of them. There are plans to connect the rest. Later, a survey agreement was signed between Bangladesh and France for the construction of new carriage and wagon workshops."

Mohammad Kudrat-e Khuda signed the agreement on behalf of Bangladesh and Hari Kumar, Managing Director of Systra SA on behalf of France.
