Abdul Hamid congratulates new Indian President

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, July 26: President Md. Abdul Hamid congratulated the new President of India, Droupadi Murmu, saying that her election will help strengthen the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.

Droupadi Murmu (64), was sworn in as the 15th President of India on Monday. She is the first tribal President of Indian and the second woman to become the first citizen of India as well as the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces.

In a congratulatory message to Murmu, Abdul Hamid said, "On behalf of the people of Bangladesh and myself, I extend my heartiest congratulations to you as the 15th President of the Republic of India... As the President of Bangladesh, I wish you to assume this high office as one of the best countries in the region in empowering women. Glad to see."

Hamid said Bangladesh-India relations are based on mutual history and culture, trust and longstanding friendship and continued cooperation.

He said, “The unwavering support of the Indian government and people during our liberation war in 1971 was an important moment in our relationship. Today, our cooperation spans many fields, including trade, connectivity, water resources management, energy, border management and security.”

Abdul Hamid said he was confident that friendly ties and good cooperation between the two countries would be further strengthened during her (the new president's) tenure as the President of India.

"I look forward to working with you not only to advance mutual interests between our countries, but also to enhance efforts towards development, peace and prosperity in the region," the President said.
