Accused of 1971's crime against humanity case arrested

Dhaka, June 23: RAB has arrested Md. Abdul Jalil Gazi (71), who has been on the run for a long time and is under the arrest warrant of the International Criminal Tribunal for crimes against humanity of 71 years.

He was arrested from Ainuchbagh area under Dakshinkhan police station of the capital on Thursday. His house is in Srifalkati of Shyamnagar police station in Satkhira.

RAB-3 Staff Officer (Media) Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Farzana Haque gave this information on Friday (June 23) morning.

He said, according to preliminary investigation and case sources, six charges of crimes against humanity including murder, genocide, kidnapping, detention, torture and looting were brought against him in 1971. Jalil in connivance with other Razakars carried out looting and various types of sabotage activities in the area.

During the Great War of Liberation in 1971, the Pakistani army established a camp in Shyamnagar village of Satkhira with the help of Razakars including Abdul Jalil Gazi, and under his leadership, the Razakars used to capture the common people of the village and force the Pakistani Army to build bunkers, prisons, and torture shells.

Regarding the case, he said, in 2022, the International Criminal Tribunal-1 filed a case against him for crimes against humanity including murder, genocide, kidnapping, detention, torture and looting during the Great War of Liberation in 1971. In the case, the International Criminal Tribunal issued an arrest warrant against the accused for not appearing in the court. After that, he left his locality and moved to Ainuchbagh area under Dakshinkhan police station of Dhaka city to hide himself.

To avoid arrest, Jalil Ghazi changed places regularly and led a fugitive life. At that time, he used other's mobile phone as a means of communication with his family.

While in hiding, he used pseudonyms to keep his personal identity hidden. RAB also said that legal action has been taken against accused Jalil Gazi after his arrest.
