ADB praises PM Hasina's success in tackling Covid-19

Dhaka, February 24: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has lauded the strong leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for successfully conducting the Covid-19 epidemic and conducting nationwide vaccination activities.

Manmohan Prakash, ADB's local director, said in a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganobhaban on Tuesday afternoon that they would provide USD 940 million to help Bangladesh purchase the Covid-19 vaccine. Assistant Press Secretary to the Prime Minister KM Imrul Kayes told state news agency BSS after the meeting.

Quoting the ADB director, Imrul said, "In order to accelerate the economic recovery from the epidemic, the ADB discussed USD 940 million in assistance under the ADB's APVAX facility for the proposed immunization program in Bangladesh. Patuakhali-Payra railway is giving priority to construction.

Imrul said the ADB representative appreciated the timely decision of the Prime Minister to open all sectors of the economy in phases and said that this was the reason for the recovery of Bangladesh's economy and GDP growth and remittances.

Praising the government's move to vaccinate the people, the ADB Director said Bangladesh is one of the three countries in Asia which is successfully conducting the Covid-19 vaccination campaign. Prakash handed over to the Prime Minister the ADB's book 'Journey to Prosperity in Asia: Policies, Markets and Technology for More Than 50 Years' and the three-volume 'Broad Development Plan for the Economic Corridor of Southwestern Bangladesh'.

PMO Secretary Tofazzal Hossain Mia was present at the meeting.
