Dhaka, June 4: BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who is undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital, has been moved from Coronary Care Unit (CCU) to a cabin, said party's secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday evening.

He said Khaleda Zia's physical condition had improved and she had been transferred from CCU to the cabin. The BNP chairperson was taken to CCU on May 3 due to shortness of breath.

On April 11, Khaleda Zia was diagnosed with coronavirus infection. Although she was initially treated at home, the BNP chairperson was admitted to Evercare Hospital on April 27.

Earlier, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's condition was stable, said Professor AZM Zahid Hossain, a member of her personal medical team. He told reporters in front of the hospital on Monday night, "Khaleda Zia is breathing normally now. She feels a little short of breath this morning. After a medical examination, they took her to the coronary care unit in the afternoon."

BNP chairperson is undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital under the care of cardiologist Shahabuddin Talukder. A 10-member medical board was formed for her on April 28.

Khaleda Zia had been undergoing treatment under the supervision of a private medical team from her rented house 'Firoza' in Gulshan since April 11 after contracting the coronavirus. When she was tested again after 14 days, her reports came positive. She was taken to Evercare Hospital on the night of April 27 for a medical examination and was admitted to the hospital that night after a CT scan of the chest and a few tests.

The 76-year-old former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia had to go to jail three years ago after being convicted in two corruption cases.

Following the outbreak of the pandemic in the country, the government granted her temporary release on March 25 last year on condition of "humanitarian consideration". Her parole time was later extended twice. Khaleda Zia has been staying at her Gulshan home since then while her contact with outsiders is limited.
