Akhaura-Agartala railway to be inaugurated in September
Dhaka, May 18: Akhaura-Agartala dual gauge railway project will be completed in June. After the trial run, the railway will be opened in September. The Prime Minister of India and Bangladesh will inaugurate the railway. First, cargo trains will run on this railway. The people of both the countries will get the benefit of this railway.
Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujon told reporters after inspecting the Akhaura-Agartala dual gauge railway project in Shivnagar area of Akhaura, Brahmanbaria on Wednesday.
The work on the Akhaura-Agartala dual gauge railway project with a length of about 10 and a half kilometers started in July 2018. Indian contractor Texmeco Rail and Engineering Limited got the job. The one-and-a-half-year project has been extended in four phases till June this year.
Highlighting the commercial importance of the railway, the railway minister said that if the railway is opened, it will open another door of trade with India. The cost of transporting goods by road is high. But the cost of transporting goods by train will be less. The people of both countries will get the benefit of this.
Regarding the development of railways, he said, according to the railway plan, 4-5 more new trains will be provided by next September. We hope to complete the construction of Akhaura-Laksam double line by next June. That is, from Dhaka to Chittagong, a double line is becoming. Once the double line is completed, we will provide several new trains by connecting the new meter gauge coaches that have arrived.
