Allegations of human rights abuses made by the United States are not true: Home Minister

Dhaka, December 11: Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has denied allegations of human rights violations against the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and seven former and current officers of the force.

The minister said, "Every incident is investigated by a magistrate. If any organization is accused of human rights violations, legal action is taken against them."

The minister was responding to a question from reporters after the distribution of 'Ideal Customer Honors Memorial-2021' at Dhaka WASA's Buriganga Hall in the capital's Karwan Bazar on Saturday (December 11).

Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said, "The United States did not objectively impose sanctions. They imposed the ban on the basis of exaggerated news. None of our organizations violate human rights. If they do, legal action must be taken against them."

The Home Minister said, ‘Maintaining law and order in Bangladesh is challenging. Drug dealers use firearms to protect themselves. When the trained forces of the country carried out the operation, they used weapons and there were shootings and casualties.

On Friday (December 10), the United States announced sanctions against 15 individuals and 10 organizations on International Human Rights Day. The list of sanctions also includes the names of RAB and six former and current officers of the Bangladesh Special Forces.

The list also includes former RAB director general and current IGP of police Dr Benazir Ahmed and current RAB director general Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.
