Dhaka, February 6: Approval of a medical college has been revoked for not conducting quality education programs as per relevant laws and regulations. Five medical colleges have been suspended for the same reason.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque gave this information in a written question and answer session at the National Parliament session on Sunday.

In the session chaired by Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, the minister also said that there are currently 76 private medical colleges in the country. Among these, Nightingale Medical College (Ashulia), Northern International Medical College (Dhaka), Northern Private Medical College (Rangpur), Aichi Medical College (North) and Shah Makhdoom Medical College (Rajshahi) have been suspended. At the same time the approval of CARE Medical College has been revoked.

In response to a question from Jatiya Party's Masiur Rahman Ranga, the Health Minister said that the activities of 66 private medical colleges are supervised by the Department of Health Education and Family Welfare and the Directorate of Health Education. At the same time supervision is also done from affiliated public universities and medical universities. Apart from this, the quality of medical college education is supervised by the committee constituted as per Private Medical College and Dental College Act-2022 and Private Medical College Establishment and Management Policy, 2011 (Amended).

He said that the private medical colleges have full control of the government. Based on the report of the committee formed in accordance with the relevant policy, the admission process of 5 private medical colleges was suspended and the approval of one medical college was cancelled.

Earlier, a fine of five lakh taka per student was collected and deposited in the state treasury for admitting additional students in violation of the management policy of some private medical colleges.
