Assurance of extension of visas and scholarships for Bangladeshi women students in the UK

Dhaka, December 3: The government has called for increasing the number of visas and skill-enhancing scholarships for Bangladeshi women in the UK. Minister of State for Women and Children Fazilatun Nessa Indira made this call in a bilateral meeting with Lord Tariq Ahmed, Minister of State for Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and United Nations Affairs of the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

According to a notification sent by the Bangladesh Embassy, the state minister made this call after the recently formed UK government's plan to reduce student visas. He said that increasing the visa and skill enhancement scholarships will create more job opportunities for Bangladeshi girls in different countries including the United Kingdom.

On the occasion of 50 years of Bangladesh-United Kingdom relations, State Minister Indira hoped to organize a joint program on women's education and women's empowerment. In his speech, Lord Tariq Ahmad assured to increase the visa and scholarship of Bangladeshi women. He said that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's leadership on women's empowerment, climate change and Rohingya issues has been appreciated around the world.

Saida Muna Tasnim, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh appointed to the UK, and Md. Hasanuzzaman Kallol, the Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, were present at the meeting held at the Queen Elizabeth Center in London.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Minister of State expressed his sincere condolences on the death of Queen Elizabeth and informed the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Britain that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina attended the state funeral of the late Queen of the United Kingdom. The Minister of State expressed his interest in working together with the aim of raising the current good relations between Bangladesh and Britain to a higher level. During this time they discussed various important contemporary regional and international issues.

The Minister of State for Women and Children is on a visit to the UK to attend the 'Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative Conference (PSVI) 2022' organized by the UK Foreign Office.
