Dhaka, April 18: The government has allowed the movement of motorcycles through the Padma Bridge from 6 am on April 20. In view of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr, according to the Prime Minister's order, motorcycles will run on Padma Bridge from 6 am on April 20. Motorcycles will run through the service lane on the left side of Padma Bridge. The speed limit will be 60 km per hour.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said this at Ganobhaban on Tuesday. He said, this instruction has been given experimentally. Under no circumstances shall motorcycles be allowed on the main bridge outside the service lane. Toll shall be paid at the prescribed rate. If the rules are not followed then the decision will be revoked.

Earlier, Padma Bridge was opened for traffic on the morning of June 26 last year. On the first day, the bikers lost their appetite. According to the bridge management authority, 60 percent of the vehicles that crossed the bridge till noon on the first day were motorcycles. That night, two people on the motorcycle died in an accident. On the same day, it was reported that the government has banned the movement of motorcycles on the Padma Bridge from 6 am on June 27 until further orders. Since then, all other vehicles were moving but the motorcycle movement was stopped.

The bridge authority, the managing organization of Padma Bridge, said that the drivers must obey at least 4 rules to cross the bridge on motorcycles. One of these guidelines is-

a) Paying bridge toll (Tk 100, one way).

b) Riding motorcycles in designated lanes of bridges.

c) Riding the motorcycle at a maximum speed of 60 kmph.

d) Both the motorcyclist and the rider should wear standard helmets.

Besides, the riders have to follow all the rules of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) in the matter of riding motorcycles.
