Awami League candidate wins Chittagong by-election

Dhaka, April 28: Awami League candidate Noman Al Mahmud was elected unofficially in Chittagong-8 constituency by-election. He got 67,205 votes in the boat symbol. His closest rival Bangladesh Islami Front candidate Sehab Uddin Muhammad Abdus Samad got only 5,087 votes. His symbol was candle.

Returning Officer and Regional Election Officer Muhammad Hasanuzzaman announced the result on Thursday night. This announcement was made from the result announcement center set up in the gymnasium hall adjacent to MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong city. Total voters in 190 centres of this constituency are 5 lakh 17 thousand 651 people. 75,305 people voted in the election, which stands at 14.55 percent.

In the announced results, Islamic Front Bangladesh candidate Syed Muhammad Farid Uddin got 1,860 votes in chair symbol, National People's Party (NPP) candidate Kamal Pasha got 673 votes in mango symbol and independent candidate Ramzan Ali got 480 votes in single star symbol.

Earlier, the polling started at 8 am on Thursday. Lasts till 4pm. Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) voting has been conducted in 190 centers of this parliamentary constituency. Voter turnout was low in this by-election. Relatively more votes were cast in villages than in cities. However, no untoward incident was reported in the election.

According to the sources of the Election Commission, the total number of voters in this seat is 5 lakh 17 thousand 652. Among them there are two lakh 63 thousand 543 male and two lakh 54 thousand 109 female voters. The candidates in this by-election are - Awami League nominee Noman Al Mahmud, Islamic Front Bangladesh candidate Syed Muhammad Farid Uddin, Bangladesh Islamic Front candidate Sehab Uddin Muhammad Abdus Samad, National People's Party (NPP) candidate Kamal Pasha and independent candidate Ramzan Ali.
