Dhaka, October 5: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the Awami League is a women and girl-child friendly government.

"We believe that if the proper development of girls with education and technical knowledge is ensured, they too will develop as good citizens and will be able to make a significant contribution in building the 'Golden Bangladesh' the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman dreamt of," she said.

She said this in a message given on the occasion of 'National Girl Child Day-2021' on Tuesday (October 5).

The Prime Minister said, "I am happy to know that 'National Girl Child Day' is being observed across the country with the theme 'We will be rich in technology, we will build a digital Bangladesh'. On this occasion, I extend my best wishes to all the girls in Bangladesh."

"Ensuring the overall socio-economic development of women and girls, including empowerment of women and girls, stopping violence against them, preventing trafficking in women and children, ensuring women's safety in the workplace and ensuring full and equal participation of women in mainstream socio-economic activities is the government's prime goal," she said.

"For the welfare of girls, we are implementing various programs including introduction of unpaid education till graduation, introduction of stipends, distribution of free books, increase in the number of female teachers. Our government has formulated the National Child Policy-2011, National Women Development Policy-2011 and Child Day Care Center Act-2021," she said.

The Prime Minister said, "The Prevention of Violence against Women and Children (Amendment) Act-2020 has provided for the death penalty as the maximum punishment for rape. In order to prevent child marriage and dowry, Child Marriage Prohibition Act-2017 and Dowry Prohibition Act 2018 have been formulated. As a result of these steps we have taken, child marriage has declined at a significant rate. We are giving stipends to 1.4 crore female students. The school enrollment rate, girls' higher education and technical education rates have increased. Our girls are also achieving success in sports," the Prime Minister added.

Sheikh Hasina said, "I think if our girls become proficient in information technology to keep pace with the changing world situation, they will go further. I believe that our daughters will lead the next generation in the whole world."
