Awami League leader Joynal Hazari dies

Dhaka, December 28: Former Member of Parliament of Feni Awami League and veteran political figure Joynal Abedin Hazari is no more (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilahi Raziun). He was 76 years old.

He breathed his last on Monday (December 27) afternoon while undergoing treatment at Labaid Hospital in the capital. Hazari was a bachelor.

Joynal Hazari died at 5:15 pm on Monday while undergoing treatment for life support in the cardiac department of Labaid Hospital.

Joynal Hazari started politics from his student life. As a student, he was the General Secretary (GS) of the then Student Majlis (now Student Parliament) at Feni Government College. Later he became the general secretary of the greater Noakhali district Chhatra League. Later, Joynal Hazari also served as a presidium member of Jubo League.

He was the general secretary of Feni district Awami League from 1984-2004. He was elected MP from Feni-2 (Feni Sadar) constituency in 1986, 1991 and 1996. He also served as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Youth and Sports for the last time as an MP.

When the caretaker government took office before the 8th parliamentary elections of 2001, the joint forces raided his house on the night of 17 August. He then excaped to India. Joynal Hazari was expelled from the party in 2004.

When the Awami League returned to power in 2009, he returned to the country from India and surrendered to the court in an ongoing case. Hazari was later acquitted of all charges. In 2019, he got a post in the advisory council of Awami League.
