Awami League mayoral candidate wins Sylhet city polls after 10 years

Dhaka, June 22: Awami League nominated mayoral candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury has won the Sylhet City Corporation election with huge votes. He got 1 lakh 19 thousand 991 votes in boat symbol. After 10 years, Awami League won the post of mayor in Sylhet city and Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury has been elected as the Sylhet city mayor for the first time.

Returning Officer Faisal Quader announced the results of the election unofficially at the Jalalabad Gas Auditorium in Sylhet on Wednesday night.

The results obtained show that Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury's nearest rival Nazrul Islam Babul of Jatiya Party got 50,862 votes. Independent candidate Md. Shahjahan Mia 29,688 votes in bus symbol, Islami Andolan Bangladesh Maulana Mahmudul Hasan with hand fan symbol 12,794 votes, Zaker Party's Md. Zahirul Alam 3,405 votes in rose symbol, independent candidate Mohammad Abdul Hanif Kutu with horse symbol 4,296 votes. Md. Chalah Uddin Rimon got 2,648 votes in cricket bat symbol and Mushtaq Ahmed Rauf Mustafa got 2,959 votes in deer symbol.

The election was held for the fifth time in Sylhet City Corporation consisting of 42 wards with an area of 79.50 square kilometers from 8 am to 4 pm on Wednesday.

In this year's Sylhet City Corporation election, eight candidates contested for the post of mayor and 359 candidates for the post of councillor. Out of which 272 are contesting in general ward and 87 in reserved women's ward. The total number of voters in Sylhet city is 4 lakh 87 thousand 753 people. Among them 2 lakh 54 thousand 363 male, 2 lakh 33 thousand 384 female and six third gender voters.
