Dhaka, June 22: Awami League candidate Advocate Nuruddin Chowdhury Noyon has been elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in Laxmipur-2 (part of Raipur and Sadar) constituency. Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) polling was held on Monday (June 21) from 8 am to 4 pm at 136 centers. Awami League candidate received 1,22,547 votes while Jatiya Party (JP) candidate Sheikh Fayez Ullah Shipon (plough symbol) got 1,886 votes.

Noyon is the district general secretary of Awami League and Shipon is a member of Central Jatiya Party.

Dulal Talukder, the returning officer in charge of the by-elections and the regional election officer for the Comilla region, said the election ended without any untoward incident. Voter turnout was somewhat hampered by the rains.

BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was elected MP from this seat in 1996 and 2001. Twice after that she resigned from the post of MP of this seat.

In the 1996 by-election, Harunur Rashid, Awami League's youth and sports secretary, was elected MP. Later in the 2001 by-election, former district BNP president Abul Khair Bhuiyan was elected MP. Then BNP was elected in this seat in 2008. In 2014, Mohammad Noman of Jatiya Party was elected MP after it formed alliance.

In 2018, Noman of Jatiya Party was again nominated in alliance, but he withdrew from the election due to reasons unknown. Later, independent candidate Kazi Shahid Islam Papul was elected MP with the support of local Awami League leaders.

Papul was arrested in Kuwait on June 6 last year in a bribery and human trafficking case. A Kuwaiti court later sentenced him to seven years in prison. The seat was declared vacant and by-election was held.
