Bailey Road fire: Police register case, detain 3

Dhaka, March 2: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have detained three people including two owners of Chayer Chumuk restaurant (small restaurant) on the ground floor of Dhaka's Bailey Road building that was gutted in a massive fire on Feb 29.

Police said they are being interrogated. The detainees are - Chayer Chumuk owners Anwarul Haque and Shakil Ahmed Rimon and Kacchi Bhai manager Jisan.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime and Ops) Dr. K. Mahid Uddin told a media briefing regarding the overall situation of the terrible fire at Bailey Road at DMP Media Center on Friday (March 1).

Referring to the police observation, he said, "There were two restaurants on the ground floor. There was a large one at the back and a small light food tea and coffee restaurant at the front. The fire started from the small restaurant. That video footage is also available to everyone. The police will file a case as the plaintiff in the case of the fire, alleging death due to negligence. Anyone from the victim's family can file a case if they want to file a case. Three people have been arrested and questioned in this incident."

In response to the questions of the journalists whether there is any neglect of responsibility of the owner of the building in the incident of this fire, Mahid Uddin said that starting from the owner of the building, legal action will be taken against everyone who is found responsible for the fire. Stating that 46 people have died in the fire so far, Mahid Uddin said that 20 men, 18 women and eight children died in the fire. 40 of the dead bodies have been identified. The bodies of 38 people have been handed over to their families. The bodies of the two have been kept in the freezer of the morgue. Attempts are being made to identify the remaining six through DNA testing.

He also said that the DMP and CID have collected evidence of the incident. After the incident, senior police officers including IGP and DMP commissioner were present at the spot and provided all possible assistance.
