Ban of Hilsa fishing to be lifted from midnight

Dhaka, October 25: The 22-day ban on catching hilsa will end at midnight on Monday (October 25). Fishermen will start catching hilsa again from 12:01 am on October 26.

In accordance with the Protection and Conservation of Fish Rules, 1985, enacted under the Protection and Conservation of Fish Act, 1950 for the conservation of Hilsa resources, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock issued a notification on September 26 banning harvesting, transportation, storage, marketing, buying and selling, during the main breeding season of Hilsa this year, from October 4 to 25, a total of 22 days.

Md. Iftekhar Hossain, Public Relations Officer, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, said that during the main breeding season of Hilsa from October 4 to midnight on October 25, the procurement, transportation, storage, marketing, buying and selling of Hilsa fish was banned across the country. That ban is ending at midnight today. Then there will be no obstacle to catch hilsa.

During the ban on hilsa harvesting during the main breeding season of hilsa this year, 11,118.88 metric tons of VGF rice was allotted to the fishermen.

In the 2021-22 financial year, under the government's humanitarian food aid program, this allocation was raised to 5 lakh 55 thousand 944 fishing families in 151 upazilas of 37 districts who were refraining from harvesting mother hilsa. More than 27,602 fisher families have been brought under the allocation this time than last year.

Under this, each family has been given 20 kg of rice. VGF rice was allocated this year before the start of the 22-day ban.
