Dhaka, August 8: Today is the 93rd birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's wife Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib. Bangamata was born on August 8, 1930 in the then Gopalganj Mahakumar Tungipara village. Her nickname was Renu. Father's name is Sheikh Zahurul Haque and mother's name is Hosne Ara Begum. She was the youngest among one brother and two sisters. On the night of August 15, 1975, she was brutally martyred by the killers of the Father of the Nation.

President Md. Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib. Apart from government programmes on the day, various political and social organizations including Awami League and its affiliated organizations organized tributes, discussion meetings and Milad Mahfil. Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and other electronic media are airing special programs on the occasion of the day.

Bangladesh gained independence through a long struggle under the leadership of Bangabandhu. Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib was the motivation behind this fight-struggle-movement. She followed Bangabandhu's entire political life like a shadow and was a source of inspiration in his every work. When Bangabandhu was repeatedly living his life as a prisoner in the hands of the Pakistani rulers after the declaration of the six-point charter of the liberation of the Bengali nation, the leaders and activists of the Awami League used to meet Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib. She used to convey various directions of Bangabandhu to them and inspire them to continue the struggle.

In the Agartala Conspiracy Case, Bangabandhu was released on parole by some miscreants who conspired to jeopardize the freedom struggle. Then Begum Mujib's firm stance against parole accelerated Bengal's liberation struggle. Following the ideals of Swami Bangabandhu like a shadow, Begum Mujib did many risky things in her life, for which she had to bear many hardships.

Due to the devotion, patriotism, visionary thinking, intelligence and bravery that Begum Mujib has shown in the movement and struggle of the people of this country, she is today sitting on the seat of Banga Mata along with the Father of the Nation. She will forever be remembered for his unique general role in the politics of this country. This noble woman was brutally martyred on August 15 with the family of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by the bullet of the murderer.
