Bangladesh ahead of many countries in South Asia: Indian High Commissioner

Dhaka, October 20: Newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Kumar Doraiswamy has said that Bangladesh is significantly ahead of many countries in South Asia in many areas including poverty alleviation and women's empowerment. He said this during a meeting with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury at her Parliament office on Monday.

During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations, parliamentary activities, formation of parliamentary alliance groups, trade and investment, education and culture.

Welcoming the newly appointed High Commissioner, the Speaker said that India's relations with Bangladesh are very strong and friendly.

Recalling India's cooperation in the 1971 war of liberation, the Speaker said India is not only Bangladesh's closest neighbor but also a loyal friend. The Speaker hoped that the newly appointed High Commissioner would make every effort to improve the relations between the two countries.

Noting that India attaches great importance to the development of relations with Bangladesh, the newly appointed High Commissioner of India said that in the future, he expressed interest in working together on various issues of mutual interest including climate change, women's empowerment, poverty alleviation.

He said Bangladesh and India could play an important role in international forums like CPA and IPU by forming parliamentary alliance groups.

Besides, the newly-appointed High Commissioner hoped that the reciprocal visits of MPs and the training of officials in the Indian Lok Sabha would further enrich the parliamentary democracy in both the countries.

At the time, the Speaker assured the Indian High Commissioner of all kinds of cooperation in the performance of his duties Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury.
