Dhaka, December 1: Newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma said that Bangladesh always gets top priority from India as it has a policy towards neighbouring countries.

He said, "India has a policy for neighbouring countries. Bangladesh is given the highest priority in this regard. Bangladesh gets the most priority in any matter."

He said this during a courtesy meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban on Wednesday. After the meeting, Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary KM Shakhawat Moon gave this information in a press briefing.

Referring to Bangladesh as a 'very good friend' of India, the High Commissioner said that Bangladesh and India will work together to combat terrorism in the region. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has clearly said that Bangladesh has never condoned terrorism.

The Prime Minister mentioned that terrorism has no religion and no boundaries.

She said, "Awami League never condones terrorism and never allows the soil of Bangladesh to be used for this purpose." She pointed out that Bangladesh and India can resolve all outstanding issues including Teesta river water distribution through talks. She invited Indian businessmen to invest in 100 Special Economic Zones of Bangladesh.

Pranay Verma said that trade and communication between Bangladesh and India have increased significantly in recent times.

During the meeting, both Sheikh Hasina and Verma also discussed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to facilitate economic relations between the two neighbouring countries.

Pranay Verma said that India will help Bangladesh in the power and energy sector. He praised the socio-economic development of Bangladesh under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Pointing out that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman sacrificed his entire life for the people of the country, Sheikh Hasina said, following the sacrifice of Bangabandhu, she herself is sacrificing her life for the people of the country.
