Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 27 October 2023: Bangladesh and the United States have expressed interest in working together to address the pernicious challenge of climate change.

They agreed on this in a meeting between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Special Envoy on Climate Change Saber Hossain Chowdhury MP and US President's Special Envoy on Climate Change John Kerry at the US State Department in Washington on Tuesday 24 October afternoon. Both the envoys agreed to deepen the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.

The two special envoys discuss broader issues at bilateral and global climate platforms, including the UN Climate Change Conference COP. Bangladesh Special Envoy Saber Chowdhury reiterated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's commitment and leadership on climate issues and said that Bangladesh will continue to play a vocal role on behalf of climate-vulnerable and less developed countries to fill the gaps in the implementation of global climate commitments. He apprised Kerry about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government's various initiatives on climate, including the 'Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan'.

US Special Envoy John Kerry said the US is working with countries such as the World Bank on financing global reductions in carbon emissions and climate change. Regarding investment in Bangladesh's renewable energy sector, Kerry said the United States is willing to be a partner in helping Bangladesh achieve its climate goals.

Both Chowdhury and Kerry stressed the importance and need for consensus building and global solidarity through strengthening collective efforts aimed at making the upcoming climate conference COP-28 a success. Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United States Mohammad Imran was present in the meeting.

Earlier, Saber Hossain Chowdhury presided over a committee meeting comprising members of parliament from various countries on funding and progress in fossil fuel phase-out at the Senate Hart Building in Washington, DC. US Senator Ed Markey and Canadian Senator Miss Rosa Galvez along with leading members of parliament from Uruguay, Bolivia, Colombia, Zambia and Uganda participated in the meeting.
