Bangladesh at risk of 8.6-magnitude earthquake

Dhaka, March 1: Highlighting the geographical location and geological analysis of Bangladesh, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. ASM Maqsud Kamal said that the country is at risk of an earthquake of magnitude 8.3 to 8.6.

A round table discussion on 'Earthquake Risk Mitigation and Preparedness in Bangladesh' was held at Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of Dhaka University on Tuesday. It was organized by the Department of Disaster Science and Climate Resilience. He said this while giving a speech.

Presenting the main article, Prof. Dr. Maqsud Kamal said that the building code should be properly followed in the construction of houses to prevent earthquake damage. He emphasized on adopting long-term planning and building social awareness to mitigate the potential risk of earthquakes. Besides, he urged teachers, researchers, policy makers, media workers and professionals of public and private organizations to work unitedly to mitigate the risk of earthquakes in the country.

State Minister of Disaster Management and Relief Ministry Dr. Enamur Rahman was present as the chief guest in the event. He urged the stakeholders to seriously check the issue of earthquake tolerance in the construction of houses. The state minister said that everyone has to play a responsible role from their own position in this regard.

Dean of Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences of Dhaka University Dr. Md. Zillur Rahman, President of Dhaka University Teachers Association Prof. Dr. Md. Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan, Director General of Directorate of Disaster Management Md. Mizanur Rahman, Director General of Directorate of Fire Service and Civil Defense Brigadier General Md. Main Uddin, former Director General Brigadier General Abu Naim Md. Shahidullah, representatives of public and private organizations, university teachers, researchers and experts participated in it.
