Bangladesh: Awami League leaders register massive victory in civic body polls

Own representative, Dhaka, 17 January 2021: Awami League mayoral candidates have maintained their dominance in the second phase of the election as in the first phase of the municipal elections.

In the second phase, elections were held in 70 municipalities on Saturday. The privately declared results so far have shown the victory of the Awami League candidates in the boat symbol.

Noakhali's Basurhat Municipality: Awami League's candidate for the post of mayor of the district's Basurhat municipality Abdul Quader Mirza has won privately. District Election Officer Mohammad Rabiul Alam said Awami League's boat symbol candidate Abdul Quader Mirza was elected unofficially with 10,736 votes. His nearest rival Kamal Uddin Chowdhury, the BNP-nominated candidate for the top symbol of paddy, got 1,008 votes. According to the latest news, the Awami League candidates have won the mayoral post in 48p municipality. Besides, 6 independent candidates and 4 BNP candidates have been declared winners and the results of one have been declared suspended.

Among the winning candidates are Awami League boat symbol candidate Omar Farooq Khan in Daganbhuiyan municipality of Comilla district, Awami League candidate Roxana Mortaza Lily in Gopalpur municipality of Natore, Awami League candidate Shahnewaz Ali Mollah in Gurudaspur municipality.

Moniruzzaman Monir, his nearest rival independent candidate Manjurul Islam Bimal Rail Engine, Bangladesh Awami League nominated boat symbol candidate Shawkat Hossain Bhuiyan in Comilla's Chandina municipality, Awami League candidate in Kushtia's Mirpur municipality Haji Enamul Haque, Awami League candidate in Bheramara's Kumarsul Candidate Samshuzzaman Arun, Awami League's Matiur Rahman Moti in Bogra's Sariakandi, BNP candidate Tofazzal Hossain Bhutto in Santahar municipality and independent candidate Alhaj Jane Alam Khoka in Sherpur municipality, Awami League candidate in Mongla Port Rahman in Bagerhat. Khurshid Haider Tutul, Awami League candidate for the post of mayor of Bandarban Lama municipality. Mawla Selim of Awami League-backed Moktad has been elected as the mayor of Zahirul Islam and Sandeep municipality of Chittagong.
