Dhaka, March 17: Today is March 17, the centenary of the birth of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This day will be celebrated through various programs in the golden jubilee year of Bangladesh's independence. Mujib Borsho started from Bangabandhu's 100th birthday in 2020, which has been extended till December 16 this year.

The architect of independent Bangladesh, the undisputed leader of the Bengali nation was born on this day in 1920 in an aristocratic Muslim family in Tungipara, Gopalganj district. This day is also celebrated as National Children and Adolescent Day.

On the occasion of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu, the golden jubilee year of Bangladesh's independence, the National Implementation Committee has organized a ten-day special program to celebrate the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Earlier, a detailed program was taken on the occasion of Bangabandhu's 100th birth anniversary last year, but due to the global situation due to the corona virus, the program of the year of Mujib was rescheduled.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started his political career in 1940 by joining the All India Muslim Students Federation. In 1946 he was elected general secretary of the Calcutta Islamia College (now Maulana Azad College) student union.

Bangabandhu was elected joint-secretary of the East Pakistan branch of the then Awami Muslim League in 1949. In 1953 he was elected General Secretary of the party and in 1954 he was elected a member of the East Bengal Legislative Assembly on a United Front ticket. This undisputed leader has to be imprisoned many times in his political life for taking a stand for justice and realizing the rights of the Bengali nation.

He led every democratic and freedom movement including the language movement of 1952, the united front election of 1954, the anti-military movement of 1958, the 6-point movement of 1966 and later the 11-point movement and the mass uprising in 1969 and received the title of Bangabandhu. Under his courageous and far-sighted leadership, the Bengali nation began to prepare for the independence movement step by step.

Although the Awami League won a landslide victory in the 1970 general elections, the then military junta of Pakistan did not hand over power and started torturing the Bengali nation. Bangabandhu called for freedom struggle in his historic speech on March 7, 1971. Which has been recognized as a World Heritage Site by its inclusion in the UNESCO International Memory of the World Register.

On the other hand, on 26 March (midnight on 25 March) he officially declared the independence of Bangladesh and under his leadership the war of liberation began in 1971. Through the bloody war of nine months many desired victories and independence of the Bengalis were achieved. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is one of the world-renowned leaders who fought for the oppressed, downtrodden and exploited people in the twentieth century.

He was awarded the Juliot-Curie Medal by the World Peace Council for his contribution to the cause of equality, friendship, independence, democracy and world peace.

He was voted the greatest Bengali of all time in a BBC poll. At the very moment when Bangabandhu started taking various measures to achieve economic liberation of the people of war-torn independent Bangladesh, the defeated forces and vested interests started a vicious conspiracy against him and as part of that conspiracy on 15 August 1975 Most of the family members were killed.
