Bangladesh census: Muslim population 91.04%, Hindu 7.95%

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, July 28: The Muslim population in the country has increased by 0.39 percent in a decade. At the same time the population of other religions has decreased. This information was presented at the publication ceremony of the first digital Population and Housing Census 2022 implemented through BBS under the Department of Statistics and Information Management at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the city on Wednesday (July 27).

Speaker Dr. Shireen Sharmin Chowdhury, State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain, State Minister for Planning Dr. Shamsul Alam and others are present as chief guests in the programme under the chairmanship of Planning Minister MA Mannan.

Dr. Shahnaz Arefin, secretary of statistics and information management department, gave a welcome speech on the occasion. Project Director Md. Dildar Hossain presented the preliminary report.

According to the report, the total population of the country is now 16 crore 51 lakh 58 thousand 616, including 8 crore 17 lakh men, 8 crore 33 lakh women and 12,629 third gender people.

According to the 2022 census, 91.04 percent of the country's population is Muslim, 7.95 percent Hindu, 0.62 percent Buddhist, 0.30 percent Christian and 0.12 percent others. In 2011, this was 90.39 percent, 8.54 percent, 0.62 percent, 0.31 percent and 0.14 percent respectively.

Analyzing the division wise data, it can be seen that the highest number of Muslims is 95.54 percent in Mymensingh division, the lowest is 86.17 percent in Sylhet.
